On 4 October members of the Save Wetlands Association held a field workshop for primary school students from Nadbrzeż and Stara Wie¶ (45 pupils altogether). The children found out about the history of Bagno Całowanie,[Rozmiar: 2324366 bajtów] dating back thousands of years, about the fact that peatlands are natural reservoirs of water, which reduces the possibility of drought and flood occurence in the vicinity, and about threats posed by illegal peat extraction, drainage and built development. After a short introduction, wearing rubber boots, we went to discover peatland plants, first in a fen near Podbiel and then in a raised bog near Karpiska. Pupils, divided into small teams searched for the plants and determined their species. Everyone enjoyed this atypical lesson in rubber boots. Their nature teachers gave the best three teams top grades for the completion of the task.

On May 9th we counted birds on the Całowanie Peatland in connection with monitoring of this area's nature. for the time being only the place earmarked for the top-soil removal experiment was surveyed but in the near future we are planning to count selected species on the entire Całowanie area. Those willing to help are welcome.

07.05.2004

The first test area (100 sq metres) on the Całowanie Peatland was stripped of shrubs. It is connected with planned active conservation of the peatland including also mowing most valuable fragments in July and August.

20.03.2004

The general assembly of the SWA (CMOK) members was held. New authorities were elected and some changes in the statute were introduced.

02.02.2004

Our educational project is now underway. We have already started activities at schools within or near the Mazovian Landscape Park. Especially designed lessons are meant to raise children'sawareness as to how vital it is to protect nature aound us. From May on field trips will be organised.

In July 2003 a patch of reed located in the western part of the Kalinowa ٱka Reserve was mown. This was done to stem reed's expansion into places occupied by meadow vegetation. In September the whole reserve area was mown and in November an information board designed by the SWA and financed by the Municipal Cleaning Administration was put up. We are looking forward to the coming growing season when positive effects of active protection measures taken in 2003 will hpefully be seen.

10.01.2004

As soon as during the first growing season after the conservation work in the Kalinowa ٱka Reserve was carried out in 2002 following the SWA's initiative changes in the reserve's flora appeared.
In the growing season 2003 we recorded re-establishing the Melampyrum cristatum, Trollius europaeus and Gladiolus imbricatus sites. you can read more about here

We received extra money from the PIN-Matra fund attached to the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fishery and Environment Formation. The money is allocated primarily to working out a scientific basis for the protection of peatlands. The project "Multifunctional use of Polish peatlands - a chance for preservation of biodiversity" will last from November 2003 to December 2005. Apart from our association engaged in the project are: the Nature Club, Institute of Land Reclamation and Grassland Farming, Agricultural University of Warsaw and Szczecin, and Dutch partners: the University of Utrecht and the University of Groningen and Fresian organisation "Fryske Gea".

22.11.2003

Our educational project, part of our project on Całowanie will start soon, GEF has already given us money to that purpose.
It is planned to organise education trips for children on the Całowanie Peatland and forest wetlands, activities at school and workshops for teachers. Those willing to help are welcome - please contact Ewa Jabłońska.

20.11.2003

At the end of October and beggining of November the whole area of the Kalinowa ٱka reserve was mown. Hay is now being carried off. In addition, an information board designed by the SWA was put up.

15.11.2003

At the end of the June and the beginning July 2003 on the area selected for active conservationwork (topsoil removed, mowing, shrub removal) monitoring plots were established. Ca. 6 hectares were mapped to identify target species which we expect will colonise uncovered peat, re-establishing valuable vegetative communities (sedge-moss beds, wet meadows).
Fragments of the mapped area were found to host large numbers of the Ophoglossum vulgatum, the rare species of fern not yet recorded in this part of Całowanie Peatland. The top-soil removal will not be carried out in the places where it grows. The remaining operations both the ones mentioned earlier and planting Betula humilis seedlings on sedge-moss beds as well as on a separtate area with bare peat are planned for summer and autumn 2004.

01.10.2003

On September 20th an outdoor photography session on the Całowanie Peatland entitled "The Coming of Autumn" was held. Its aim was to draaw nature photographers attention to the Całowanie Peatland. There were a 16 participants, who liked the place so much that almost all of them turned up the next day, too. Soo, probably in Otwock after session exhibition will be organised.
Some photographs made during the session can be seen on the Warsaw photography group sites.

CMok takes part in the project together with the Nature Club, Institue of Land Reclamation and Grassland Farming, Warsaw Agricultural University, Szczecin Agricultural University and the Dutch partners: University of Groningen (coordinator), University of Utrecht and Fresian NGO "Fryske Gea". The project will last a little over two years, starting from September. It will generate two job positions and we hereby announce a competition for them. As required by the coordinators, the ultimate selection of the candidates who meet the criteria will be made by the project`s International Steering Committee. Applications must be submitted by August 15.

30.07.2003

Our association is a signatory ( together with several dozen other NGOs) of a letter sent by WWF to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Wojciech Olejniczak on the issue of the ministerial project of agri-environmental schemes simplification.
We think that these schemes are the only possibility of protecting nature on farmland in our country. Maintaining meadows mown once a year and extensive pastures is indispensable to preserve biodiversity on large wetland areas such as peatbogs, wet meadows and floodplains in river valleys.

20.06.2003

As written in Gazeta Wyborcza the Warsaw municipal authorities have decided that A2 motorway will reach Warsaw and then the traffic will be channelled through the capital`s streets. A motorway through the Mazovian Landscape Park will probably be built in a dozen or so years.
These decisions do not reflect the real danger there is for the Całowanie Peatland since it is planned to modernise and broaden Road No. 50 from Góra Kalwaria to Kołbiel intersecting the northern part of the peatland.

5.06.2003

We decided to apply for the Rospuda valley to be a part of a net "Nature 2000". Between the 2nd and the 4th of June scientific research of the area was carried out and the vegetation was charted.

20.05.2003

On the 19th of June we organised an educational excursion for the children from the primary school in Podbiel to the peat-bog Całowanie. The children, who had already been familiar with the peatland as they were used to playing there, got to know an "environmental" aspect of that place. They occured to be very interested in the activity.

15.05.2003

Owing to this year's retardation in vegetation, the fieldwork in high peatlands of the Mazovian Landscape Park has been postponed until the beginning of June.
What already has been completed is a scientific diagnosis of the Mazovian Landscape Park forests and settlement of the research methodology.

1.05.2003

The art competition for children concerning the "Całowanie" peat-bog was announced. At the same time a series of lessons about the environment aimed at primary and secondary school pupils began.

On the 26th of April the Earth Day was celebrated as usual at Pola Mokotowskie. This year's slogan was: "The protection of fresh waters". Thanks to the kindness of the Mazovian and Chojnowski Landscape Park "Save wetlands" Association was able to prepare a stand where people could get some information on its activities as well as obtain various materials on the protection of wetlands.
At the stand, our secretary - Hubert Piórkowski answered the visitors' questions about the association, wetlands and some exotic species of insectivorous plants that the stand was decorated with. He was also interviewed by the local media.
In quite an unusual place - a trailer - we created a mini wetland. Proper humidity was guaranteed by supplying buckets of water and by rain, which rained on and off for half a day. Clumps of various species of sedge, Meadow-sweet (Filipendula Ulmaria), blooming King-cups (Caltha Palustris) and other wetland plants growing in water aroused the interest of the public.
Our presence during the Earth Day let us get in touch with "The National Parks" magazine and the third channel of the Polish public TV. We also hope that at least some people who took part in the Earth Day celebration became aware of what the wetland ecosystems are and why they are worth protecting.

16.04.2003

On the 12th and the 13th of April in the village of Podbiel the workshop aimed at the creation of an efficient programme to protect the "Całowanie" peat-bog was organized . The following parties participated in it: representatives of the local community and of the "Mazovian Landscape Park", naturalists and members of the "Save wetlands" Association.

27.03.2003

Inhabitants of Brwinów, Milanówek and Pruszków want a motorway to pass through their towns expecting it would facilitate access to the capital and accelerate a regional development. An open letter concerning the case was sent to the Voivodship Office and published by "Gazeta Wyborcza".

7.03.2003

The Warsaw City Council was supposed to present its opinion about the route of the A2 motorway and to submit it to the Government by the end of January. It has not been done yet.

A meeting of Warsaw authorities and the General Management of the State Roads and Highways took place on the 10th of January. During the meeting the northern motorway exit was established. The investment takes off in 2005. Nothing was said about the southern exit.

5.03.2003

In the latest motorway constructing programme by the Ministry of Infrastructure one can find a mention of the "Konotopa" junction as well as a laconic statement about a bypass in the south of Warsaw. The investments are planned for the years 2005-2008.

2.03.2003

On the 4th of June 2002 the Motorways' Council in the Ministry of Infrastructure chaired by the Secretary of State - Andrzej Piłat accepted the General Management of the State Roads and Highways motion concerning potential directives about the localization of the A2 motorway between Brwinów and the "Konotopa" junction. The fact that 90% of traffic would be likely to be directed to Warsaw itself was said to be the decisive factor in choosing a place for the junction. Because the question of the Warsaw part of the motorway had widespread coverage in the media, the Council declared to solve the problem later. The promise has not been fulfilled yet.

As far as field work is concerned, in mid-November we marked off the areas for Betula humilis restoration and the experiment with topsoil removal. We also installed piezometers in order to monitor changes in groundwater levels.

07.12.2002

Our initiative to take active protection measures in the "KALINOWA َKA" nature reserve met with positive response from the FS of the MC Dept. On 18 Nov. the Voivodship Conservation Officer agreed for our plan to restore litter meadows with unique flora through cutting down birch-trees overgrowing the meadow, mowing and removing the biomass and to introduce there Maculinea teleius. At the same time, she recommended our representative should be present during the actual protective activities.

12.11.2002

At the end of October the GEF (Global Environmental Facility) confirmed granting us a subsidy - the full amount we applied for. We are still waiting for the decision of the Ecofund concerning their subsidy.

12.11.2002

Most probably the A2 motorway will cut through the Całowanie Peatland somewhere. Anyway, we will have to work out how to make sure as little harm as possible is done.
